What’s The Best Lightweight Sleeping Bag? Top 6 Revealed

sleeping-bag

When it comes to camping, your gear is mission-critical. Comfort and safety are of utmost importance. But when you’re humping all of your gear on your back, every ounce counts. Modern sleeping bags use innovative technologies to reduce their bulk, while still retaining heat and keeping you warm in even freezing temperatures.

The difference between different bags can be enormous. Not only is comfort a factor, but also the durability of the material. While you’ll probably be laying on a ground sheet, sharp rocks or sticks can stick cause abrasion to the material and lead to ripping. On a long trip, a torn sleeping bag could mean hypothermia or sickness.

How We Chose Our Ratings

Therefore, the three factors that we considered most heavily in our research were durability, comfort, and cost. Our study involved looking through hundreds of different listings to narrow our list down to the six most impressive sleeping bags. These, we believe, offer the highest value for money.

From there, we read every review that we could and ranked each product for the individual factors. By doing this, we could more fairly compare and contrast them and come to an accurate conclusion as to what the best piece of kit is.

Designed for all seasons, at least in most of the United States, we believe that this is the ideal bag for the majority of adventurers. What we love about it is the excellent value for money that it offers. By being adequate for all seasons you only need to buy one piece of kit, and at this price, it’s an absolute steal. We highly recommend it for the majority of people.

If you’re camping outdoors, the temperature is a huge concern. This bag is rated for as a low as 15 degrees, while around 30 to 40 is where you’ll be most comfortable. Of course, in winter in New England or Colorado, this might not cut it. But for the majority of the year, across most of the country, this bag will give you a comfortable night's rest.

Made out of a lightweight polyester shell and lining, with cotton for added warmth, the entire kit is under three pounds. While not as light as some of the options on this list, and certainly physically larger, you get more bang for your buck. If you’re only camping in the heat of the summer, this isn’t the best choice for you.

But for the rest of us, who are seeing a wide variety of climates, having a large range of acceptable temperatures allows us greater flexibility and freedom.

Plus, they have a no questions asked refund policy. If you don’t like the product, for any reason at all, let them know, and they’ll refund you straight away. For a kit like this, custom-focused refund policy is a huge benefit and one of the major reasons why we believe that this is the right choice for most customers.

The polyester shell is water resistant, meaning that even if your tent leaks you won’t wake up soaked in water. Likewise, the materials mean that it’s machine washable. When you get home, you can throw it into the washing machine on a cool gentle setting, and it will dry within hours because of its lightweight build.

One of the world’s most respected outdoor companies, Hyke & Byke have been trusted by tens of thousands of customers. Whether you’re enjoying a weekend up at the lake or adventuring across the Arctic, customers have relied on Hyke & Byke for every situation.

This bag is specifically designed to give you versatility. A 3-season piece of kit, it’s ideal for Summer, Spring and Fall. But it’s only rated down to about 15 degrees, although 25 is probably the lowest most of us would want to go and still feel comfortable. Regardless, it means you only need this bag and possibly a thicker version for winter.

The bag comes in three different sizes depending on how tall you are. For anyone outside of the usual range, this comes as a huge relief. Having half of your torso out of the bag isn’t a fun situation! Plus, with an Egyptian Mummy shape, you save on space and get a contoured and therefore warmer night’s sleep from the same materials.

It comes with a small bag which it packs neatly into. Unlike other brands, the bag has straps on, which makes it easy to attach onto the outside of your pack if you don’t have enough room. But at around three pounds, you should be able to squeeze it into any decently sized hiking backpack alongside the rest of your kit.

They can achieve such a low weight and retain heat because of their use of duck down. Down traps heat into the bag and when combined with the air that’s in the pockets of fabric, turns into warm insulation. Therefore, you’ll be kept warm even in cooler temperatures despite the bag itself being relatively thin.

Explicitly designed for warm weather, this is our pick for adventurers who are only outdoors during the summer. If you don’t need protection for the cold and need a way to keep dry and cold, the ECOOPRO bag is the perfect solution. It’s the smallest and most lightweight on this list because it’s thin and doesn’t retain heat at all.

It weighs around 1.7 pounds, making it tiny. If you’re struggling for space, this is a great solution because it’s half the size of other lightweight alternatives. It doesn’t use any down, which is why it’s able to keep you cool. It only uses polyester and a small amount of cotton for insulation.

The result of this material composition is that it can be packed down into a small bag. If you’ve ever struggled to roll up a sleeping bag before, this is the solution. Without any thick materials, even a young child can pack it into a storage bag with ease.

Some might even argue that you could use this during Spring and Fall. However, we think that most people would find it too cold. If you don’t mind sleeping in clothes, you could make this a three-season bag, but it would be dangerous to consider using this kit during the coldest months of the year.

  • Mummy-style adult sleeping bag for camping in temperatures as low as 0 degrees...
  • Can accommodate most people up to 6 feet 2 inches in height

It’s important to note; we don’t recommend this bag for the vast majority of people. However, if you’re planning to camp or adventure during the winter months where it might get down to negative temperatures, this is the best lightweight option. It’s not small, it’s not compact, but when compared to other winter bags, it’s tiny!

Keeping warm in these low temperatures is practically impossible with down insulation and thick materials. As a result, you’re going to have to sacrifice portability and size. However, it’s worth noting that in return you get a premium quality piece of kit that will last you for years to come.

Plus, with a slightly extended build, it’s good for people who are up to 6 foot 2 inches tall. While not super tall, the vast majority of bags won’t fit those of us who are this tall, and therefore it’s important to consider.

After having read hundreds of reviews, we’re very confident in recommending this for winter adventures. Multiple reviewers mentioned how they were too warm in plus degree temperature. Likewise, many complimented the quality of the zip, which is often a failing point in many cheaper and lower quality sleeping bags which might tug and rip the material.

The first thing that you’ll notice about this product is the shape. Unlike more modern kit which tends to be sleek and form-fitting, this envelope style bag is perfect for bigger people and those who shift or move during their sleep. Mummy bags are incredibly uncomfortable for some, and if that’s you, we’d recommend that you try an envelope option.

This bag is designed specifically for summer. It’s not going to cut it in even Fall weather, although you might find it’s acceptable during warm Spring days. In weather below 55 degrees, you’re going to find yourself feeling a little cool. Realistically, this is a thin polyester sheet with very little more to it. For hot temperature, it’s excellent. Other weather? Not so much.

Regardless, it’s important to take a look at the price. At this cost, you can justify buying it only for a short Summer trip and then still afford to purchase a thicker version for Fall and Winter when the temperature drops.

Overwhelmingly, the reviews that we read were positive. In particular, many people noted how the bag was incredibly wide, even big enough for a 220-pound man to rest in comfortably. Compared to typical Mummy alternatives, that’s very roomy.

We also noticed that the majority of reviewers were using it during the warmest months of the year. As you might expect, most noted how they slept well and felt that they weren’t too hot or too cold. The thin polyester should help to draw away some of the heat, which can help to keep you cool while still protected during the night.

Another envelope style bag, this isn’t a Summer option, it’s supposed to be all season. The problem with that is that it only goes as low as 20 degrees. We have a feeling that the company manufacturing this product must be in California or Texas because Winters in much of the country can get way below zero.

As a result, it’s quite hard to imagine that this bag could be good for anything but Fall or Spring. It was too thick and insulated for Summer, but not enough for Winter. So, it’s not a 4-season bag, but a 2-season and not even in consecutive months! For this reason, we think that this isn’t a great option for most people.

The one redeeming quality which might make it consideration is the price. If you’re buying multiple sleeping bags or purchasing for young children who might get particularly cold even in warm months, this could work. One positive reviewer was for a Boy Scout, and she did mention that it worked for their situation.

Buyers Guide: Choosing A Lightweight Sleeping Bag

Sleeping bags vary greatly in price, and therefore you need to decide on a budget and stick to it. From there, your number one concern should be whether it’s safe enough for the environment you’re camping in. If it is:

  • Is it comfortable?
  • Will it be durable enough for the length of your trip?
  • Is it small enough?

Durability is an interesting subject. Lightweight sleeping bags are made using thin and relatively weak materials. Therefore, they aren’t going to be incredibly tough. However, it’s the seams and stitching where most people see problems. Unless you catch the material on a rock or stick, it’s unlikely to rip whereas the stitching can come apart due to your movement.

As you spend more and opt for trustworthy brands, you tend to see higher quality stitching and thick seams which will hold up under pressure. The result is a bag that could last your for decades, so long as you care for it and keep it clean.

What are you doing? If you’re camping in rural Alaska, you’re going to need different gear than those of us who are heading out for a weekend with our friends in the local woods. Context matters and therefore you should consider the temperature conditions, the roughness of the terrain and how long you are going for.

It’s important to recognize, however, that the phrase ‘lightweight’ isn’t particularly specific. A lightweight piece of gear for the South isn’t going to weigh the same as the one that’s for twenty below in the North of Canada. Buying a generic piece of kit isn’t ideal. You need to buy based on a specific trip or region and period you plan to travel.
